I was born and bred in Plymouth, Devon, where I first was recognised in the local news “Baby Dawn born alone with Mum.”
At the age of five I then felt the love of the stage when I was asked to accompany a local celebrity at a Pantomime turning a giant clock and was rewarded a giant Teddy Bear that was bigger than me!
In the summer our mum took me and my sisters and baby brother to a caravan holiday where I would do impersonations, dance and sing at the ripe age of six, from then on all I wanted to do was entertain.
Most of my School days are forgotten except my ability to write with a vivid imagination and also from my ‘make believe’ years playing alone in my bedroom. I mainly remember writing lengthy stories the very night before my English homework was due, but happy to say despite the bad grammar I was given a high grade for the content.
Over the years I have written celebratory poems, plays and short stories for my family and friends that have mainly been a hobby, always with the intention of turning it into my life’s work.
I am happy in my own company especially when writing as this takes me to my “Happy Place.”. Some of my favourite authors are Beatrix Potter, Roald Dahl, Colin Thompson and Charles Dickens. I basically love comedy, animals, fantasy and adventure stories, I’m also partial to the odd murder mystery.
I met my husband Ian in 1980 and we are still together we have spent many years sharing life experiences, from our younger years till now still enjoying life’s joys, we have an amazing daughter Perri who has been my inspiration for some of my stories, one of which my first book ‘Snail Village’ illustrated by Lorna Davey, was inspired by a real situation my daughter did on her way to school-that’s where it all began.
After having my daughter Perri, I took a four year career break, this is Perri at the ages of 3 to 8, she was quite a character, my memories of the time we spent together before she went to school were so much fun and creative - we used to make believe camping and build a fire by using chop sticks and use actual sleeping bags, visit the make believe beach by using a sand pit and the bath was the sea laying out beach towels and pack a picnic.
Perri has certainly been my inspiration for so many different ideas for short stories with moral meanings, trying to bring your child into the world and live their best life in your own way is so very enjoyable, especially when they turn into an adult and reflect this.
